The Role of the Crane Signal Person

If you’ve been following us for quite some time, you know by now that all L&M Crane & Rigging crane operators are licensed in NYC, NYS, & NJ. You’re also probably aware that they are OSHA, NCCCO, and Bechtel and Jacobs certified, and that they follow the best practices to ensure safe operation at all times.

In this blog post, we’ll be discussing the role of the crane signal person. Keep reading to learn more about the signal person’s key responsibilities in lifting operations!

Role & Responsibilities of The Crane Signal Person

The crane signal person holds one of the most important jobs in any lifting operation. Acting as the crane operator’s ears and eyes, the signal person’s main responsibility is to communicate with the crane operator at all times.

According to OSHA’s Subpart CC – Cranes and Derricks in Construction: Signal Person Qualification, a signal person is considered qualified when he/she:

  1. Knows & understands worksite signals.
  2. Knows & understands the relevant signal person qualification requirements specified in subpart CC.
  3. Competently displays use of said signals.
  4. Understands equipment operations/limitations, which includes the crane dynamics involved in swinging, raising, lowering and stopping loads and in boom deflection from hoisting loads.
  5. Passes a practical test & an oral or written test.

A crane signal person is required on three conditions:

  1. When the lifting point of operation is not within full view of the crane operator.
  2. When the operator’s view of where the equipment is traveling is obstructed.
  3. When either the crane operator or the person managing the load concludes that a signal person is necessary due to site-specific safety concerns.

Discover the Difference a Full-Service Crane Company Makes

With most crane rental companies, renting a crane does not automatically provide with the necessary personnel to complete your lift. Hiring the crane operator and signal person is often left up to you. However, L&M Crane & Rigging is a full-service crane company, which means when you rent a crane from L&M, we also provide you with the proper personnel to get the job done safely and successfully—including your very own licensed crane operator and qualified signal person.
